Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University and The City Lights Orchestra Partner to Present "America in the Age of Obama" Wednesday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m.

CHICAGO - In joyous celebration of President Elect Barack Obama's historic inauguration, the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University (ATRU) and The City Lights Orchestra, under the musical direction of Rich Daniels, will present "America in the age of Obama, A Concert Honoring Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. For one night only, the stage of the Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Congress Parkway, will overflow with the talents of hundreds of musicians, including leading figures from the worlds of pop music and jazz, as well as a number of prominent Chicagoans. Tickets are on sale now.

Joining Daniels and The City Lights Orchestra on stage will be three-time Grammy Award-winner Linda Clifford; acclaimed jazz trumpeter Orbert Davis; the Soul Children of Chicago under the direction of Walt Whitman; the Walter Payton College Prep Concert Choir under the direction of Jeffrey Weaver; and other musical guests including Chicago jazz-gospel vocalist Suzanne Palmer, plus Chicago jazz guitarists and vocalists Bruce Mattey and Mark Madsen. The musical selections performed will include original compositions as well as patriotic songs and beloved classics.

CBS 2 Chicago Anchor Jim Williams will emcee the evening. Other special guests including Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan; Boeing Company Vice President Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, granddaughter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt; and Roosevelt University President Charles R. Middleton will provide narrations of historic texts, poetic readings and theatrical soliloquies.

The Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL), the Illinois American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (IL AFL-CIO) and many affiliated local labor unions are generously providing partial sponsorship for this spectacular musical celebration. This inaugural event also marks the first in a series of concerts that the Auditorium Theatre will present in partnership with The City Lights Orchestra. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the creation of The City Lights Foundaton, serving at-risk youth in Chicago as well as the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University.

"For decades, the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University has strived to present not only the world's most talented artists, but also works that speak to today's audiences and provide insight into the contemporary world," said ATRU Executive Director Brett Batterson. "Celebrating this inspirational event in partnership with Rich Daniels, an event that is transformational fo our great country and indeed our world, fulfills this ambitious mission at an entirely new level."

"Our vision is to present a program that will have cross generational appeal," added Daniels. "The United States of America, and indeed the world, is at a crossroads. We hope this unique evening will give the audience a palpable sense of this historic time while also beginning a new chapter in the Auditorium Theatre's glorious history."

The history of Rich Daniels and The City Lights Orchestra encompasses more than three decades of enthralling performances, collaborations with world-renowned musicians, countless awestruck audiences and substantial critical acclaim. Since 1974, Daniels has been making music professionally and appearing across the country at private events and concerts. Some of the illustrious artists he and his orchestras have accompanied include: Ray Charles (a frequent collaborator), Mel Torme', Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick, Dennis DeYoung, Diane Schuur, Dihann Carroll, Michael Buble, David Foster, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, The Manhattan Transfer and Garth Brooks.
