Education: A Midnight Cry

A Midnight CryAs part of the educational initiatives surrounding the Auditorium's November 2008 production of Margaret Garner, the Auditorium's Department of Creative Engagement is presenting an in-school tour of James DeVita's musical, A Midnight Cry: The Underground Railroad to Freedom.

Thanks to the support of Lead Education Sponsor Kraft Foods, we are able to offer this program at NO COST to the Chicago Public School System!

Whisperings of a railroad helping slaves across to the free states seemed to good to be true to young Lida Anderson.  But with the help of other slaves, abolitionists and her family, Lida risks everything to be free.  Leaving behind the only life she knows, she embarks on a dangerous journey out of slavery to freedom.

Participating Schools receive:

  • Pre-show lesson plans and materials tied to the Illinois Learning Standards
  • A performance of A Midnight Cry in your school
  • A post-show workshop facilitated by ATRU education staff and the show's artist/teachers
  • A Teacher's Resource Pack with suggestions for further learning
